Who doesn’t like dessert, something sweet always hits the spot. But what I enjoy at times is a elevated finger food dessert, not a cookie, cup cake or ice cream cone. These are great but they lack the level of elegance and complexity most of the time. Now enter the Cannoli, a delicious finger food dessert with visual elegance, complexity in flavor and easy to make.
Why is the cannoli so popular in Italy and around the world. When I say it has complexity in its flavors let me tell you a little of what your getting in a cannoli. The shell - the dough is a lot like a pasta dough, with the kicker for flavor being the Marsala wine that is added, and WOW what an addition to add flavor. Now for the filling, we start with Ricotta cheese, then we add some powdered sugar, a little whipped cream, some vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a little lemon zest (optional). Then you fold in some mini chocolate chips and this is your filling. Once you pipe in the filling to the shells you finish the cannoli by dipping the end in mini chocolate chips or crushed pistachios topped with a little powered sugar. Just reading this list of ingredients has to have your mouth watering to try a cannoli if you’ve never had one. If you’ve had them before, reading this has to have you craving another.
I think there’s this misconception that making cannoli at home is very difficult. Its just the opposite, its very easy. The only equipment you will need that you may not have are cannoli forms that you see in the pictures. These are available on Amazon for $7. There’s nothing more rewarding than making a dish at home to impress your guests and the cannoli will absolutely accomplish this.
